" When the time was come when you were going to glorify him, as he had loved his own who were in the world, he loved to the end "(Eucharistic Prayer IV).
The Passion of Christ is deeply moving depiction of the last twelve hours of Jesus' life since his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane to his death on the cross ... I had the privilege of attending a few weeks ago a preview of the film. This is a visually impressive and a great spiritual depth. The film (in Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin - subtitled in English or French) is meant in all faithful to the Gospels, to Tradition and history.
A warning for sensitive hearts: the film is very brutal, very explicit violence (R/17ans listed in the U.S.). We do not view this film, we experienced! I personally believe that this work is a grace for our time. I came out with a greater love and reverence to Our Lord with these words to heart: "Blessed are the peacemakers" (Mt 5, 9). Treat yourself for Lent 2005, a prayer time on DVD!

The Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
Christians speak of "the agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane." What does this phrase mean and it is its deeper significance?
R / "[...] In Gethsemane, Christ experiences a moment of great anguish, faced with the will of the Father, against which the weakness of the flesh would be tempted to rebel. At that time, Christ stands in place of all the temptations of humanity against all the sins of humanity to the Father say: 'That this is not my will be done, but yours! " "(John Paul II, Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 22).
"By being fully God but also fully man, Jesus certainly knew the human fear, but as Son, He was dedicated to the Father's will in everything. This does not mean that there was a contradiction between the human will of Jesus and the divine. His will, in fact, was totally subservient to the Father. Christ was aware that he was taking upon himself "all the sins of the world" (past, present and future), and it caused him such anguish and such spiritual pain that He sweated blood. (See Luke 22, 44). "(Catholic Passion Outreach , Leader's Manual ).

The historical existence of Jesus Christ
Did Christ really exist? Events recounted in the New Testament really happened?
R / No historian casts substantial doubt on the existence today of Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish "crucified under Pontius Pilate." Regarding the historicity of the events included this excerpt from the Second Vatican Council:
"the Church has held and holds firmly and with great consistency, that these four Gospels, which she says without hesitation historicity , faithfully transmit what Jesus the Son of God during his life among men, really did and taught for their eternal salvation until the day he was taken to heaven (cf. Acts 1.1 to 2 ). Indeed, what the Lord had said and done, the apostles after his ascension transmitted it to their listeners with this deeper understanding of the things themselves, instructed by the glorious events of Christ and enlightened by the light of the Spirit truth (cf. Jn 14:26, Jn 16:13), enjoyed. The sacred authors therefore composed the four Gospels, selecting some of the many elements already submitted either orally or in writing, writing a summary of others, or explaining the function of the situation of the Church, preserving the form of a sermon, so us deliver always on Jesus things true and sincere. Whether, indeed, from their own memories and their memories, or from the testimony of those who "were from the beginning eyewitnesses and servants of the Word", they composed their writings in order to make us test the "soundness" of the lessons we have received (cf. Lk 1.2 to 4). ( Vatican II - Dei Verbum , 19).

a threat?
Why so many people in our world today they feel intimidated or even threatened by the person of Jesus why so many people prefer that her story is a myth among other ?
R / Jesus challenges us and forces us to confront our sinfulness and seek His forgiveness and mercy. The name and person of Jesus often amount to "moral life" to the ears of someone who has no faith. Thus, his message is often denied before it is heard. Jesus calls us to conversion-conforming our lives to God's will rather than ours. Jesus asks us to make radical choices: God's ways or paths "world"; faith in Him and faith in ourselves. This is an affront to our way of "modern" thinking, in our materialistic culture, who prefers to celebrate ambiguous concepts like "tolerance" and "individualism" at the expense of "truth." In such a society, the message of the gospel seem deeply cons-cultural, perhaps even threatening. This is why many people would like that this is only a legend because as a real person, Jesus and his message will inevitably challenge.

Knowing Jesus
knew Jesus in the Garden so he would die?
R / To answer this question on the knowledge that Christ had of himself and "future", these include some passages of the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
Soul and human knowledge of Christ
471 Apollinaris of Laodicea stated that in Christ the Word had replaced the soul or spirit. Against this error the Church confessed that the eternal Son also assumed a rational soul man.
472 This human soul that the Son of God assumed is endowed with a true human knowledge. As such it could not be so unlimited: it was exercised in the historical conditions of its existence in space and time. Therefore the Son of God has been wanting in becoming man "grow in wisdom and in stature and grace "(Lk 2:52) and even having to ask about that in the human condition we must learn experimentally (cf. Mark 6.38, Mark 8.27, Jn 11.34 etc.).. This reflected the reality of his voluntary humiliation in "a slave" (Phil 2:7).
473 But at the same time, this truly human knowledge of the Son of God expressing life divine person (cf. St. Gregory the Great, Ep. 10.39: DS 475). "Human nature of the Son of God, not by itself but by its union with the Word, knew and showed her all in what belongs to God "(St. Maximus the Confessor, qu. dub. 66). This is the first case of the intimate and immediate knowledge that the Son of God made man has of his Father (cf. Mk 14.36, Mt 11.27, Jn 1.18, Jn 8.55, etc..) . The Son also showed in his human knowledge the divine penetration he had secret thoughts of human hearts (Mk 2.8; Jn 2.25, Jn 6.61, etc..).
474 By its union with the Divine Wisdom in the person of the Incarnate Word, human knowledge of Christ enjoyed the fullness of the science of eternal plans he had come to be (cf. Mk 8:31; Mc 9.31 Mk 10.33-34 Mk 14.18-20 Mk 14.26-30). Ignore what he acknowledges in this regard (cf. Mk 13.32 ), He also said failing to disclose mission (cf. Acts 1.7).

That this cup pass from me The devil
the garden of Gethsemane, shortly before the soldiers of the Temple fail to capture him, Jesus utters the following words: "Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me" ( Mt 26.39). What does this mean?
R / "The image of the section discusses almost always in the Bible, the idea of God's wrath against sin. The 'Cup Vertigo' as called Isaiah (Isaiah 51.22), which is said to be drunk, the dregs' by sinners (Ps 75.9). The Apocalypse also speaks of the 'wine of the wrath of God, which is prepared fresh in the cup of his wrath "(Rev 4:10). At the beginning of the letter to the Romans, St. Paul established a fact that has value universal principle: 'The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness "(Romans 1:18). Where there is sin, there can only apply the judgments of God against it, otherwise God would accept the compromise with sin, and the distinction between good and evil would disappear. However, Jesus in Gethsemane is ungodliness, wickedness of the whole world. He is the man 'made sin'. Christ-is written-is dead 'to the sinners in their place, not only in their favor. He agreed to meet for all, so it is the 'responsible' for all, guilty before God! It is against him that 'proves' the wrath of God and that is 'drink the cup'. [...] The sins, in other words, were on him, he had endorsed, for he was free to 'do his own'. [...] Jesus has done all his human pride, any injustice, any violence, any lies, all the hatred that is something so terrible. "Raniero Cantalamessa, Life in the Lordship of Christ , p. 73.

In the film, besides Jesus and three of his apostles (Peter and Jean Jacques), a fifth figure is this: the devil. Why Mel Gibson did he choose to represent the devil in his film?
R / The Gospels tell us that early in his "public life", Jesus went into the wilderness and fasted forty days to prepare for his mission. However, in the desert, "he was tempted by the devil" (read the story in Matthew 4, 1-11). The evangelist Luke tells us that after having exhausted every possible temptation, "the devil away from him until set. Tradition the Church sees in this 'fixed time' to which Luke refers to the time of the passion, the "hour" to which Jesus himself refers several times to discuss the mystery of his death.
"Father, the hour has come: glorify thy Son
,
that your Son may glorify you
and that, under the authority
thou hast given him over all flesh,
he gives eternal life to all those thou hast given
! (John 17.1-2).
In the film, we see Jesus as crushing a snake with his foot. This scene is an allusion to the story of the first sin of men book of Genesis. In fact, after Adam and Eve had eaten the "fruit of knowledge of good and evil" and Eve bore the blame on the serpent, the Lord said to him:
"Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle and every beast of the field, you crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will put enmity between thee and the wife [see Apocalypse 12] between thy seed and her seed [Jesus]. It [his offspring, that is to say Jesus] will strike at the head and thou shalt bruise the heel. "(Gen. 3.14 to 15).
course human appearance, androgynous devil's in Gibson's film is purely an artistic choice. Satan, like all angels, no body whatsoever. But the choice still reflects a certain spiritual reality.
"The devil tempts us in manifesting itself as" an angel of light. "That is why the tradition assigns the name Lucifer (" light bearer "). He proposes an action that seems good but in fact is bad. He wants us to believe that God is a stern teacher who wants to oppress us with arbitrary laws. He wants us to see sin as liberator. What is his purpose in doing this? He wants us separated from the love of God in this life and eternity. Remember that the devil has rebelled against God by pride and for this reason it is deprived of God's presence for eternity. He hates God and wants to get as many people as possible to hate it too, or at least to disobey him and reject the grace of salvation in Jesus "( Catholic Passion Outreach, Leader's Manual ).

Satan, a symbolic figure?
"Satan", is not just a symbolic figure to speak of evil?
103.1, 15). Their whole being, the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they contemplate "constantly face of my Father in heaven" (Mt 18.10), they are "workers of his word, attentive to the sound of his word" (Psalm 103.20).
330 As purely spiritual creatures, they have intelligence and will: they are personal creatures (cf. Pius XII: DS 3801) and immortal (cf. Lk 20.36). They surpass in perfection all visible creatures. The brightness of their reflected glory (cf. Da 10.9 to 12).
Christ "with all his angels"
331 The Christ is the center of the angelic world. They are his angels to Him: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all his angels ..." (Mt 25,31). They are to Him because created by and for him: "For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers-all was created by Him and for Him "(Col. 1:16). They are to Him more because He has made them messengers of his plan of salvation: "Is that all are not ministering spirits, sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" (Hebrews 1:14).
Falling Angels
391 Behind the disobedient choice of our first parents there is a seductive voice, opposed to God (cf. Gen 3.4 to 5) who, through envy, makes them fall in death (cf. Wis 2:24). Scripture and the Church's Tradition see in this being a fallen angel called Satan or the devil (cf. Jn 8.44; Rev 12.9). The Church teaches that it was at first a good angel, made by God. "Diabolus enim et alii quidem Deo daemon natura creati sunt boni, sed ipsi per se facti sunt Mali" (cc. Lateran IV in 1215: DS 800).
392 Scripture speaks of a sin of the angels (cf. 2P 2.4). This "fall" consists in the free choice of these created spirits, who radically and irrevocably rejected God and His Kingdom. We find a reflection of that rebellion in the tempter's words to our first parents: "You become like God" (Gen 3.5). The devil is a sinner from the beginning "(1 Jn 3:8)," father of lies "(Jn 8:44).
393 It is the irrevocable character of their choice, not a defect in the infinite mercy of God, which makes the angels' sin unforgivable. "There is no repentance for them after the fall, as there is no repentance for men after death" (St. Damascene, FP 2.4: PG 94.877 C).
394 The Scriptures confirms the negative influence of the one Jesus calls "a murderer from the beginning" (Jn 8:44), and has even tried to divert Jesus from the mission received from the Father (cf. Mt 4:1-11) . "It might destroy the works of the devil that the Son of God appeared" (1 Jn 3:8). The most serious consequences of these works was the mendacious seduction that led man to disobey God.
395 The power of Satan is not infinite. He is a creature, powerful because it is pure spirit, but still a creature he can not stop building the kingdom of God. Although Satan may act in the world out of hatred against God and his Kingdom by Jesus Christ, and although his action may cause serious damage - a spiritual and physical nature even indirectly - for every man and society, this action is permitted by Divine Providence with strength and gentleness guides human history and the world. Divine permission of evil activity is a great mystery, but "we know that God does all contribute to the welfare of those who love Him" (Rom 8:28).

Why Jesus had to die?
But why Jesus had to die? Why did He chose a so extreme and bloody way to reconcile the world?
"The Passion of the Christ reveals a God in love. Eternity, God decided to answer our fundamental question about evil in us proposing another mystery even more outrageous: the mystery of Jesus crucified, "stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles" (1 Cor 1.13). It is indeed shameful for a Jew that if Jesus is the Messiah, he has been nailed to a cross, and it is unreasonable for a Greek, if Jesus is God, he could have left his start happiness! Unless God is indeed mad, mad as can be a lover who does not know what means employed to convey to his beloved how much he loves her.
And that is the focus of the preaching of the Gospel: God wanted to use human suffering to show us how far he loved us. As a good connoisseur of human psychology, God knew that men think hard to love those who do not sacrifice for them.
So he invented a way unheard of us prove his love. He gave up his divine privileges, he became a man "like everybody else" and he eventually let himself tortured by his brothers. But just when the men tortured, He forgives. He is as happy to have this opportunity to show them that his love is unconditional. [...]
When Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd already bloodied by flogging and he yells "Behold the Man" (Ecce Homo), it would have been shouting "Here is God! It was on Friday that Jesus has revealed to men the better-even through his suffering is what God's heart. (Pierre Descouvemont, Guide difficulties of the Catholic faith ). "

Mary Magdalene and Jesus
I read somewhere that Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute or even a sinful woman but in truth the wife of Jesus. What is it exactly? Without
question are you referring to the novel by Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code) or that of Nikos Kazantzakis, on which the film is based The Last Temptation of Christ . The tradition of the Church, born of the faith of the early disciples and their specific testimony (see Luke 1: 1-4), has always held that Christ remained a bachelor throughout his life, putting into practice his this same speech he gave "some choose this state [celibacy] for the kingdom of God" (Mt 19:12).

question are you referring to the novel by Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code) or that of Nikos Kazantzakis, on which the film is based The Last Temptation of Christ .
