The historical existence of Jesus Christ
Did Christ really exist? Events recounted in the New Testament really happened?
R / No historian casts substantial doubt on the existence today of Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish "crucified under Pontius Pilate." Regarding the historicity of the events included this excerpt from the Second Vatican Council:
"the Church has held and holds firmly and with great consistency, that these four Gospels, which she says without hesitation historicity , faithfully transmit what Jesus the Son of God during his life among men, really did and taught for their eternal salvation until the day he was taken to heaven (cf. Acts 1.1 to 2 ). Indeed, what the Lord had said and done, the apostles after his ascension transmitted it to their listeners with this deeper understanding of the things themselves, instructed by the glorious events of Christ and enlightened by the light of the Spirit truth (cf. Jn 14:26, Jn 16:13), enjoyed. The sacred authors therefore composed the four Gospels, selecting some of the many elements already submitted either orally or in writing, writing a summary of others, or explaining the function of the situation of the Church, preserving the form of a sermon, so us deliver always on Jesus things true and sincere. Whether, indeed, from their own memories and their memories, or from the testimony of those who "were from the beginning eyewitnesses and servants of the Word", they composed their writings in order to make us test the "soundness" of the lessons we have received (cf. Lk 1.2 to 4). ( Vatican II - Dei Verbum , 19).
