St. Basil advises us to develop our attention because it will help us gain control over anger, temperance and control of our language. This benefit resulted from a combination of attention with the memory that all the desires of earthly pleasures of control will only lead us to a bitter end. He writes:
"Therefore Be attentive to yourself, and know that the rational part of the soul is as intelligent, passionate, while the party is also irrational. And one is by nature to govern, while the other exists only in obedience to reason and be persuaded by it. So never leave your mind, reduced to absolute slavery, become the slave of the passions also, do not yield to the passions struggling against reason and allow the transfer to themselves the authority of the soul " .
